Panic Away: Is Panic a Sign of Mental Illness?
One of the terrors a panic attac
k brings is the fear that the victim is going insane, but panic disorder is not usually a symptom of madness. It is a purely physical response to a buried fear or phobia, which the sufferer may not even be aware of, says Panic Away author Barry McDonagh.
The person may notice that he has a regular panic attack when he is in a certain place, and this could be because he has unpleasant memories that are somehow triggered by the location. His body responds by preparing for “fight or flight” with a large rush of adrenalin – and thus causing his frightening symptoms.
With his body flooded with the hormone that causes the symptoms, it is no use telling himself to calm down or doing deep breathing exercises, says Barry. The answer is to use techniques that fight the adrenalin and stop the panic away attack recurring. His system uses a novel idea to fight stress with stress by becoming excited in order to defuse the stress.
